Made possible by money raised from National Lottery players, our heritage project recorded intergenerational voices on the impact of community-led regeneration in Custom House.

We are a small team of artists, designers and researchers from Royal College of Art, working in collaboration with community organisers from Custom House Bookshop. Our project partners are Newham Heritage Service, Newham Libraries and Rosetta Arts.

The heritage project outputs will be shared publicly through exhibitions, publications, and an engagement programme during summer 2025, and later deposited at Newham Heritage Service.

Project aims

Document lived experiences from Custom House community members impacted by regeneration (12 oral history interviews were recorded by individuals who received oral history training);

Share knowledge of community-led approaches to regeneration (directly through the words of interviewees) and amplify the voices of community members who have shaped regeneration in Custom House, and;

Recognise local knowledge (i.e., histories, skills, expertise) residing in Custom House’s predominantly working-class and global-majority communities so these perspectives are acknowledged (and intergenerational dialogue promoted) and celebrated as integral parts of heritage.
